Freshman 15

Contrary to popular beliefs, the freshman 15 does not only refer to the addition of excess pounds but however the loss of weight as well. Their are many contributing factors that lead to the freshman 15 such as:
  • Stress

It is normal for graduated high school students to enter the college environment and undergoe abnormal amounts of stress. Most new college students are not used to the fast pace that is associated with the college criteria. Also many new students are forced to hold jobs to support themselves through college and are not acclomated to adjusting their schedule around school, studying, and work.

  • Lack of sleep

Most new college students have arent fully aware of the challenges that await them and often find themselves staying up very late studying for classes. Another reason for staying up late is that they are not used to having the freedom of making their own choice on what time to go to sleep. These students more often than not stay up late hanging out with their friends or partying.

  • Malnutrition

A mojority of high school students rely on their parents to provide meals for them on a daily basis. However, when they go off to college and have to fend for themselves they find it a lot more comprable with their schedules to find a fast food joint and pig out there. As we all know many if not all fast food restaurants have been ridiculed for their lack of healthy food choices and that fact coupled with the fact that many new college students do not know how to cook, that leads to unhealthy eating.

  • Increased alcohol intake

Although some students drink during their high school careers, that number increases exponentially during their college careers. Since most students move out of their parent's house and into university dorms, that lack of supervision leads them to increase their alcohol consumption.

  • Lack of excercise

Many new college students do not know how to portion their time appropriately between school, studying, work, and partying so the time they leave for working out greatly decreases. During this time students often do not prioritize their activities intelligently which leads to a decrease in their excercise and ultimately their health.
